Abstract:

This research focuses on accelerating corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies through a climate lens, with a specific emphasis on environmental metrics. The study begins with an introduction to global warming, the global warming potential of greenhouse gases, the climate crisis, and the agreement towards the change of climate in Paris. Additionally, it explores the concept of greenhouse gas emission scopes, including the 1st, the 2nd, and 3rd Scope Along with scope calculation methodologies. The paper then delves into the greenhouse gas (GHG) landscape in India, analyzing sectoral GHG emissions and India's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets. It further examines various government schemes and initiatives aimed at reducing GHG emissions, providing recommendations specific to each sector. Next, the research explores the regulatory and reporting frameworks surrounding ESG, starting with an overview of ESG and its evolution. It highlights the rising trend of ESG disclosures and the growing role of ESG in the investment horizon. Furthermore, it emphasizes the crucial role of ESG in combating climate change. The study conducts a comprehensive GHG emission analysis by examining the GHG data of signatories to the CII Climate Action Charter. It also analyses environmental metrics for the top Indian companies from a climate lens perspective, identifying gaps and areas for improvement. Finally, the research presents recommendations in environmental metrics for corporations to accelerate their ESG strategies, particularly from a climate lens. These recommendations encompass key areas such as GHG emissions reduction, energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, waste management, and sustainable supply chain practices. By providing insights into environmental metrics and their significance in accelerating corporate ESG strategies, this research paper aims to guide corporations toward more robust sustainability practices. The findings and recommendations serve as a valuable resource for companies, policymakers, and stakeholders interested in advancing ESG goals and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
