Assessing the role of value chain emissions in achieving net zero targets: a study on selected Indian companies

Abstract:

The action of businesses in reaching net-zero targets has been well established. Companies from across the world have started to initiate measures to account their carbon emissions and reduce them. These targets, however, mostly remain limited to scope 1 and 2 due to high degree of control over them. Scope 3 accounting, on the other hand, remains substantially lower despite their significant share in the GHG inventory of an organisation. A similar situation persists in India where most companies have publicly declared only their scope 1 and 2 reduction targets. Therefore the research studies the current status on scope 3 accounting and analyses the net-zero targets of the Indian companies after the inclusion of scope 3 emissions. The data when compared to CDP’s global data on scope 3 reporting highlight the substantial underreporting of scope 3 by most sectors in India. Results also highlight that the lower reporting of value chain emissions also affected the net-zero targets of the companies.

Keywords: Scope 3, Value chain, net-zero.
