Abstract:

India’s Long-Term Low Carbon Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) appeals for climate responsive urban planning and design, and energy and material efficient buildings as key elements of its low-carbon development transition and as cities are responsible for 70% of GHG emissions (Chen et al., 2022). Indian cities are in initial stages of climate action planning wherein the urban local bodies need technical assistance to build their robust climate action plans.

ICLEI South Asia is building a Net-Zero Framework in which comprehensive and customizable climate GHG mitigation calculators have been built for Indian cities which enables authorities to select mitigation strategies and assess their climate mitigation impact. These calculators essentially are long-list of sectoral climate mitigation strategies with built-in customizable baseline assumptions, respective mitigation intervention and auto calculates energy and GHG savings potential considering regional emission factors. These calculators provide local authorities the flexibility of customizing inputs suitable to their urban demography thereby giving the clear picture on which urban services/sectors have higher GHG mitigation potential as well as need more resources, enabling them to prioritize relevant climate actions.
