Abstract:

India is a majorly coal dependent economy, deriving its energy needs from fossil fuel sources. In the wake of the transition towards renewable sources, the coal mines would be phased out over the period of the next few years. This would have a direct influence on the entire coal ecosystem and dependent people. In order to ensure that the transition is smooth for every individual who is involved, there is a requirement of proper planning and implementation. Identifying the vulnerable people, assessing their level of interests and power, and involving them are crucial to achieve a just transition in the economy. The study aims to understand the current scenario of the socioeconomic side of this energy transition, with a focus on the labour perspective and provides policy suggestions that would be crucial for India.

Key words: just transition, coal mining, fossil fuel dependency, stakeholders, coal workers, India.
