Abstract:

Green hydrogen is considered to be one of the most remarkable breakthroughs in the renewable energy sector. Green hydrogen is the future of decarbonisation and is gaining importance because it has direct advantages over other renewable energy sources, and evidently over the non-renewable sources. However, the energy transition of emerging economies, especially India, involves several barriers in the process. There is a need to identify, analyse, understand, and mitigate the risks involved in this process to reap the benefits effectively and minimize the damages involved. The government of India has launched a National Green Hydrogen Mission to embark on the journey of making a shift in the current energy mix of the country towards green hydrogen and reducing the dependence on fossil fuels. This research aims to study the risks involved in the transition of a fossil-fuel dependent economy like India towards the most promising emerging green energy technology, that is, green hydrogen. This transition involves various types of risks including technological, economic, societal, regulatory, and environmental and resource risks which have been identified through literature. These risks are further scrutinized in detail, followed by a survey of the energy experts to determine the intensity of these risks and identify which risks are more severe than others in the context of India. Multi-criteria evaluation technique of Interpretive Structural Modelling is done afterwards will be used for the analysis. Risk mapping and risk analysis will help to develop a comprehensive macro-level risk assessment framework for India. This will help the emerging entrepreneurs or established business houses trying to venture into this field, policymakers to focus on developing green hydrogen policies pertaining to specific issues in India, researchers to carry out further studies, customers and all the other potential stakeholders.
