Abstract:

In India, 355 million women are in their menstruating age and about 78% of them use menstrual products and most of these products are made of super absorbent polymers, non-biodegradable plastic, glue etc. Approximately 12 billion sanitary pads amounting to 113,000 tonnes of waste is disposed by women in India every year and out of these 28% are disposed with regular waste, 28% are disposed in open environment, 33% are buried and 28% are burnt in open atmosphere (Menstrual Waste Management- A Simple Guide). Improper disposal of sanitary products can lead to clogged drainers, soil pollution, water pollution etc. Menstrual waste management can help in solving the increasing environment crisis in India. However, more enhanced steps are now required in order to protect the environment from further damage. Green Menstruation means the use of biodegradable menstrual products. These include menstrual cups, organic cotton-based pads, period panties, cloth pads etc. These products are not only environment friendly but are also a better option for women’s reproductive health.

Key words: green menstruation products, menstrual waste, environmental hazard.
