Abstract:

The water supply shortage has increased in the recent years due to overpopulation, climate change and obsolete water facilities, where deteriorated pipes are the main cause of water leaks. Climate change is likely to make it more daunting as it will increase the variability of water supply with the effect that traditional water sources will become less reliably available to the public. The real problem is not the size of the leak but the time it takes to detect and rectify the leak. Recognizing that intelligent metering (or SW metering) has the potential to revolutionize customer engagement and management of urban water by utilities is very important. Reducing all water loss components to zero is neither technically possible nor economically viable and water loss in any city is inevitable, however the losses must be reduced to the lowest economic levels if water is to be utilized and operated sustainably.

There has been water wastage on daily basis because of fault in the pipelines due to which full water never arrives to the tap. Smart devices have transformed nearly every aspect of our city. The water sensor devices detect and control the level of water in a certain water tank and in case of any leakage or reverse flowing of water it sends out and SMS to the users. To many, reducing water losses is seen as a key to more sustainable water management. Hence, the mail goal of this dissertation is to understand the efficiency of SWM over mechanical meters via the pilot project run by MCF in selected two industrial zone with different water demand types for a short duration of 45 days in order to capture the NRW occurrence of selected sites and later on implement the SW metering project for the residential zones.
