Urban Local Bodies are vested with several responsibilities for maintaining cities services, infrastructure and ensuring quality of life for the people. Solid Waste Management (SWM) is one such crucial function that has to be performed on a daily basis. However more difficulties are encountered when SWM has to be performed in unauthorized & unplanned colonies.
In this study the process of solid waste management and the challenges faced by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has been studied by concentrating on a case study area of Sangam Vihar, which is an unplanned & previously unauthorized colony in the south zone of SDMC. The analysis has been conducted to see if there is a relationship between land use and the type of waste generated and finally recommendations have been provided keeping in mind this relationship, characteristics of the settlement, with emphasis on encouraging community engagement in the process, site-specific data collection and use of facilities available within the community.
