Abstract:

Managing an urban area is a complex job as there are different aspects to be looked at and taken care of, good Waste Management is one of the critical aspects of it. It has always been an area of concern since old times. Governments everywhere try hard to manage the waste generated by the citizens to keep up clean, sterile, and livable areas. Improper disposal of Municipal Waste can create unsanitary conditions, which in turn can lead to pollution and episodes of vector-borne illnesses. Waste generated could be divided into various categories like wastewater, solid waste, hazardous waste, industrial waste, and biomedical waste. The topic of study is to analyze Solid Waste and its management in the commercial areas of Delhi Cantonment. Thus, the discussion in the study revolves only around the solid waste. For this study, all the aspects of solid waste, including but not limited to collection, segregation, treatment, and disposal of the Solid Waste collected from the Sadar and Shastri Bazar to identify the problems with the current system are looked at, and then recommendations for the identified issues are suggested.

Bazar areas are important centers of economic growth for any area/city. These commercial areas have a high footfall and due to this higher human activity in these areas, the generation of Solid Waste is also very high. To analyze and capture the true picture of the waste generated observational survey, interviews with the DCB officials, interviews with the stakeholders(shopkeepers) in the Bazar areas were conducted. Comparison of DCB with the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, Urban and Regional Development Plans Formulation and Implementation Guidelines (URDPFI) was also done to see the compliance and the extent to which these rules are being followed. Comparison of DCB with some other municipalities of the country was also done to get a comparative analysis of the working of Urban Local Bodies in provisioning of Solid Waste Management service.

Problems in the current system were identified and preliminary recommendations for the same were given after reviewing the literature on the best practices and case studies on solid waste management from around the world, that are easy to implement on the ground.
