Abstract:

Delhi NCT has been always at the forefront of transport infrastructure investment. Yet the city is infamous for the worst traffic congestion in the world and bicycle friendly infrastructure. Due to the absence of bicycle infrastructure, with 1,565 road fatalities, the NCT of Delhi has the highest number of road accident fatalities followed by Chennai, Tamil Naidu (1,264) and Jaipur, Rajasthan (753). To understand the condition of road users (cyclist) primary survey was conducted at random locations of New Delhi which indicated that none of the respondents feel safe on-road and 77% of cyclist are accidents victim. The bicycle track/lane construction is proposed based on vehicular traffic congestion report, types of road, guidelines of Indian Road Congress. A bicycle model is also suggested to engage citizens and promote the use of cycles in New Delhi. The construction of a cycle track is beneficial for both the user and the environment. Construction of cycle track/lane and promotion of cycle will make New Delhi sustainable and inclusive. Therefore, to reduce air pollution, the number of cyclist deaths municipality should construct a bicycle track/lane, and it’s the citizen's responsibility to contribute to society and the nation by using it.
