Abstract:

Indian agriculture forms the backbone of the Indian economy by supporting 2/3rd of its population directly or indirectly. In this study, the authors have analyzed the various aspects of Indian agriculture: the problems plaguing it, upcoming technologies to solve those problems, and some promising startups working on them. The problems of intermediaries, long supply chain, lack of adequate insurance schemes, and spurious input products were studied in detail. Technologies like Mobile based applications, Remote Sensing, and Drones were investigated as possible solution points. The study looked at one such startup in India called DeHaat. It evaluated the work of the startup based on secondary literature and usage of its services. Furthermore, eighty farmers in two districts in Bihar were interviewed and their responses were studied to gauge the impact of DeHaat’s work. The results show that DeHaat has made some contributions but still has a long road to go ahead. They have been able to help farmers in procuring genuine input products in an efficient manner. However, when it comes to procuring from the farmers and creating an efficient supply chain the company which is 10 years old is still extremely far from achieving satisfactory results.
