Abstract:

Transport, a key and ever growing sector of the world is in dire need to adopt sustainable measure as it grows with consistent decarbonizing efforts. Accounting of the emission sources becomes a primary step to make efforts to arrest or reduce emissions. GIZ’s Direct GHG emission tool for vehicles is modified giving it an LCA approach is used to calculate emissions for Delhi city. Emissions released from direct source (tail pipe) are substantial more than indirect sources which was reproved but found important since they also factor in global warming plus polluting air quality. The other identified emission sources are evaporative emission, crankcase emission, tire abrasion, road wear and tear, break wear, maintenance and replacement. Projection value depicted the pollution from 4 wheelers will increase in which petrol vehicles has major share. NOx emissions are 2nd highest than CO2 and require more attention to combat than other pollutants as CO and methane. The Global warming potential of the gases will determine which to prioritize, which was not performed and is the way forward to modify. The modified tool accounts for 16 emissions whereas Direct Emission model gives only 1 emission result. LCA based tool gives more holistic results of emission of a vehicle than direct emission tool but have limitation of data availability, time, and complexity. To systematically study emission identifying gaps and measure an LCA approach should be considered.
