Abstract:

Environment Management is a system which implements processes to help monitor, develop, and execute an enterprises’ environmental policy. The ultimate goal of environment management is to improve the environment on earth by minimizing waste and maximising compliance in enterprises and industries. It involves the identification of problems that may cause environmental impacts, and the finding of solutions to combat them so as to prevent environmental deterioration and to conserve resources.

First, this study aims to clarify the true objectives of implementing an effective environmental management system (EMS) through environmental and sustainable certification. Many variables affect the EMS of an enterprise thus those that cause great positive influence will be investigated and target those for better implementation through higher number of enterprises and companies choosing to get certified.

The data and questionnaire look into the important independent assessments of environmental awareness at different level of an organization on improving the Environmental Management System and what are the identified factors to ensure it sustainability.

43 enterprises have participated as respondents to the survey in order to examine the data. The study looks into existing theoretical models examining the literature and address any areas to be improved.

The desired outcome of this paper is to show conceptually what variables need to be targeted and through which mediums and methodologies in order to further improve the EMS of an organisation through certification. The ISO 14001 is the most sought environmental management certification in South Asia and is a standard prepared by the International Organisation of Standardisation. As such, this study investigates the links between ISO 14001 certification and environmental compliance and activity.
