Solid Waste Management is a major concern for the city of Leh, an ecologically sensitive mountainous region which is also a tourist destination popular with the national and foreign tourists. The city faces many challenges with solid waste management which have been explained in detail in the study gathered through secondary sources, and further detailed out via personal interviews with officials of the municipality and other workers, site visits, transect walks, and surveys of residential and commercial establishments. With an understanding of the associated gaps and challenges with solid waste management in the city, practical solutions which can be adopted by the city municipality have been highlighted at. The study further details about the practices that can be improved based on the gaps and challenges, also the intrinsic nature of the communities here that can be taken as a strength for the city and used for improving the waste management processes. The study highlights on the importance of having effective communication with the people for a strong implementation of plans and policies of the government with respect to solid waste management.
