Identification of black spots in accident prone areas of Lucknow

Abstract:

A Blackspot is a section of a road, where the frequency of the road accidents is comparatively higher than the rest of the stretch. Reasons of these accidents may be various, such as fault in engineering of roads, enforcement of rules, careless attitude of the drivers etc. Despite all these reasons, some areas show higher number of accidents which indicates some or other major fault either in design or infrastructure. Road accidents not only results in loss of lives but also cause a huge social economic loss to the country. It is necessary to identify these accidents hotspots or Blackspots, so attain maximum road safety and ensure sustainable mobility for all. This paper is an attempt to identify such vulnerable hotspots in two areas of Lucknow, Mandiyaon and Para each falling on North and South zones of Lucknow Commissionerate. For further investigation road safety audit is also. It is found that there are 10 Blackspots at Mandiyaon and 9 Blackspots in Para. Both the stretches show more or less similar issues. Maximum road accident happens due to rash driving and over speeding. 50% of these accidents occurs on National Highways and Pedestrians, two wheelers are the most vulnerable victims among others and LMV, and Trucks are the most impacting mode of vehicles in Lucknow. The paper at last discusses some potential strategies that might help in reducing the fatalities and severity of the accidents that occurs in Lucknow.
