Abstract:

To limit climate change, countries are striving towards emission reduction across sectors. Transport is a major contributor towards emissions globally. This is more so in developing countries where rapid growth in transport demand is directly linked with the increase in GDP. Developing countries such as India, face an added disadvantage towards achieving their net-zero targets, as they require a higher share of their GDP to achieve the same. Hence making green funds for switch to sustainable development even more critical for such countries. The ability to measure impact of interventions plays a key role in countries to access green finance. This is more difficult to do for the transport sector. GhG emission modelling is one such tool which aids mapping of sustainable fleet related interventions. GhG emission modelling calculator tools, are easy to use, software-based tools, which enable public and private institutions to model the impact of fleet-based interventions such as fleet electrification, switch to biofuels, and more. Emission calculators can be used for different scales of study such as country, state, city, and organizational level. Several existing calculator tools are already in use in India for GhG emission modelling. Most of these tools are international and do not use area specific parameters such as mileage, and emission factors to calculate emissions. This study aims to develop a GhG emission calculator tool for Indian road transport. This tool will be focused on city and organizational level studies for India. The tool will be complete with India specific parameters such as mileage, emissions factors, and technology. This tool will enable public institutions in transport related policy making, developing implementation timelines for policies, and more. It will enable business owners and organizations to measure their carbon footprint and plan timelines for fleet transitions to more sustainable modes of operation.
