Abstract:

Existing solid waste collection, transportation, and disposal systems in India are in chaos. Improper solid waste management endangers the environmental and public health. The Garbage Free Cities Star Rating is one of several projects launched by the Government of India to encourage cities to improve their waste management and sanitation practices. To qualify for the desired star rating, cities applying for this assessment must follow the Garbage free city protocol. This study has been reviewed by comparing the performance of urban local bodies in Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh with respect to the current protocol for desktop assessment. Similarly, recommendation for achieving high star rating for underperforming urban local bodies has been specified.
