Abstract:

This thesis provides an overview of the views regarding witches and the behaviors of witch hunts that are common in the state of Jharkhand. The purpose of the research is to analyze the factors that may have contributed to the development of such attitudes and practices. At the same time, it also attempts to identify the interconnections that exist between witch beliefs and witch hunts. In addition to this, the research investigates the advantages that individuals receive from maintaining these beliefs, as well as the role of legislations, local institutions. The research expands from a variety of sources, such as field work, as well as secondary materials majorly from the articles, newspapers, NGO database and journals. The research investigates the patterns described before by fusing together the narratives of the respondents and their perspectives as well. This thesis, which does not pretend to be encyclopedic and goes beyond disciplinary compartmentalization, highlights the key findings from the papers published until recently.
