Understanding gender inclusiveness in public transport in Mumbai

Abstract:

Mumbai a city that is an amalgamation of various features namely cosmopolitan living, public transport, migrant class, densely populated cities etc. The city corporation that is the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) strives hard to work on efficiency in city functioning. Mumbai constitutes nearly 62.5 lakh people that commute to their work places (PTI, 2017). This commute is through different modes of transport like the public or the private transport. Mumbai that is a mega polis bears the maximum vehicle count with over 30 lakh vehicles on road, nearly 2300 train service per day, and a count of 3415 thousand buses on road in 2021 (Rao, 2021) These facilities are being used by almost every citizen in some way or the other. Citizens from every age group, every gender are benefitted by the public transport service of the city. The Brihunmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) manages the bus system across the city and Indian railways bifurcate Suburban railways in two zones namely Western Railways and Central railway.

Despite trying to make public transport user efficient, there are certain issues that still that the citizens face in their daily commute. Certain personal observations also add to the problems being identified from the citizens. The research paper talks of the inclusivity of public transport to the citizens and revolves around the ideology of avoiding certain gender biasness being observed in the public transport domain.
