Abstract:

Urbanization has led to the creation of a world with ever increasing population in the cities across the globe which is expected to rise exponentially in the coming years. By 2050, almost 70% of the global population would be residing in cities due to the rising urban population explosion thereby making cities the future of urban living and growth of the economies and citizens.

Cities are accommodating more and more people thereby leading to burdened urban infrastructure and resources due to which cities are unable to cater to the needs of its population especially children who being the majority are ignored when it comes to urban development and hence it becomes crucial for cities to focus on becoming child friendly through child responsive urban planning by addressing the rights, needs and challenges faced by children living in cities.

The present study focusses on understanding child friendliness of urban spaces in the India where children occupy a majority of urban population by highlighting various challenges faced by them and how Indian cities are making efforts to ensure those challenges are addressed through various initiatives and how the urban policy framework of the country addresses the needs of children.

The study was conducted in the city of Delhi with the objective to understand and analyse the status of child friendliness in urban spaces through qualitative research which helped understand the challenges and perceptions about child friendliness and lack of urban infrastructure and spaces for children in the city.
