Abstract:

In research conducted by UN it was said that population is increasing at a much greater rate and this increase will hamper the quality of the environment. Such increase in population affects the water quality, air quality, power consumption will be more. UEQ modelling helps in knowing the zones where environment quality is degrading, for planning committees to decide what ways can be found to reduce the effect and make the urban environment quality better. UEQ helps planning committee at a greater scale for planning a city and creating a desirable environment for people living there. The aim of this study is to model UEQ of Boston Neighborhood and to see the ability of GIS techniques in modelling UEQ. Different datasets were used in the study, i.e., Remote sensing data, GIS data and census data is used to derive the environmental, urban and socio-economic parameters for the study. Two different approaches, PCA and GIS overlay analysis were used to combine and retrieve the UEQ result. Findings showed that GIS overlay analysis showed better result than PCA.

Keywords: UEQ (Urban environmental quality), LST (Land surface temperature), NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), GIS overlay analysis, PCA.
