Abstract:

In one hand water demand is increasing day by day and at other hand the rate of depletion of water resources is very high. So to balance this supply and demand, it is essential to conserve water resources both ground water and surface water. This study aims to conserve surface water for further utilization by approaching different techniques or methods in Purulia, West bengal. The first objective of this study to make an inventory of water bodies present in this district. The study also aims to identify suitable zone for installing water harvesting structures. For this Kangsabati River catchment is chosen. For this process Landsat 8 and SRTM data has been downloaded and process through GIS software. Factors like Slope, soil, runoff and stream order are taken into consideration for decision making. These factors are taken as per the IMSD guideline and multi-criteria analysis also has been performed for accurate result. The study has also suggested setting up public water knowledge centre in every district for mediating coordination gap between government and ground level organization. Hence this study helps to understand overall process of finding suitable location for constructing water harvesting structure and show ways to mediate coordination gaps between organizations for better outcome.
