Abstract:

India being the exporter of major leather products and acting as a potential destination for outsourcing manufactured leather products is a glorious picture of leather sector. Tanneries of the leather industry as a hazardous sector imply that it can cause injury or can cause severe health issues, to the workers and laborers involved in this sector for this reason this sector is known for having hazardous jobs. The study tends to design a cost-benefit analysis via VSL estimates which are often needed by the policymakers to take significant steps for the workers. A primary survey of 162 tannery workers was carried out in the major leather hub of Kanpur, i.e., Jajmau wherein maximum numbers of tanneries are situated. Questions were framed, considering reveal preference approach. VSL and VSI are estimated using the hedonic wage model. As the study is based on the primary survey hence it is expected to have few limitations. The study has concluded that workers who perceived risk of death are paid positive wage compensation of INR 29.5 per day. The coefficient of the perceived risk of injury was insignificant so VSI has been evaluated by the probability of risk of injury. VSL and VSI for the tannery workers of Kanpur have been evaluated as 2.69 million and 0.9 million respectively.
