Enhancing water use efficiency in steel industries

Abstract:

Iron and steelmaking are a moderately water intensive process. The total water requirement, though, is large since it feeds the large-scale operations that typify many iron and steel plants. Thus, these industries are in the vicinity of surface water bodies such as rivers. The water use efficiency of the processes is very low, and technologies used for manufacturing are outdated. This is especially true for old Indian steel mills, which consume at least three times more than the best practice.
