Abstract:

Municipal solid waste management is a clear and present concern of almost all the Urban Local Bodies all over the world certainly for East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC). Organic waste or wet waste constitutes a large fraction of the total municipal solid waste generated as well as collected, which end up untreated in the landfills without any prior scientific treatment. Organic waste if treated in a systematic manner is no less than gold. NGT issued direction for compliance of Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 in NCT of Delhi so EDMC declared three models wards for implementation of SWM Rules, 2016 within six months. Therefore the present study was undertaken to identify the problems and propose systematic recommendations to achieve 100% organic waste treatment aiming “zero organic waste to landfill” in one of the model wards, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, EDMC. A thorough study was done regarding the existing methods of collection, transportation, processing and disposal. The data, facts and figures apprehensive to the study was obtained from the official municipal corporation reports, interactive survey with the officials and the residents, and observational study by individual site visits. Photo documentation was also done to reinforce the data collected and analysis. After analyzing the existing organic waste management system a detailed organic waste management system is proposed. The study reveals that the existing organic waste management system is unable to achieve 100% organic waste treatment in the ward based on SWM Rules, 2016.
