Abstract:

The Municipal Solid Waste Management has become a major issue for all the cities in the world. India is also struggling with the management of solid waste. India is urbanizing rapidly and thus the consumption patterns are also increasing day by day. This is resulting in more waste generation but municipal authorities are lagging behind in managing of the Municipal Solid Waste generated. Delhi is one of them, facing the issue of managing the solid waste generated by the city. The NGT issued order for the compliance of Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 in three identified model wards by East Delhi Municipal Corporation within six months. The present study intends to showcase the role of rag pickers in managing the solid waste and how they can be integrated in Municipal Solid Waste Management. The report shows the present scenario of rag pickers in Anand Vihar Ward of EDMC which is one of the identified model ward. The role of rag pickers is not recognized by the society. Recommendations have been given to recognize them, to improve their working conditions and other issues faced by them.
