ANNOUNCEMENTS
The waterfront development project is being undertaken in Kalyan-Dombivli under Smart City Mission. The cities are flanked by Ulhas River on the north side, which actually becomes a creek as it approaches the city of Kalyan. A stretch of 2.5 km is selected in the ABD area located in Kalyan. Currently only small portion of this stretch is being used as recreational space, next to which there is dumpsite. The other areas which have agricultural and scrub lands do not have proper access. Considering the Smart City guidelines and other relevant literature, it was found that the approach for planning and development of waterfront requires balancing and satisfying the needs of environment as well as the community. One way of assuring the environmental sustainability is by complying to various rules and regulations of the relevant acts and legislations. To assess the community aspirations, interviews and surveys were undertaken for the identified stakeholders. The site study and overall study of Ulhas river was done to assess the current situation of site and characteristics of the upstream that may have impact on the site. From the overall assessment it was found that development of waterfront is not limited to selected site, as there are many other factors which are required to be integrated apart from physical planning of the site itself. The factors at city and regional level that affect the water have to be looked into. The solutions are required to address the waterfront development in such manner which will give ecological, social and economic benefits to the city as well as surrounding areas.
