Abstract:

According to 2011 census India’s urban population has increased from 19.9% in 1971 to 31.2% in 2011. On one hand this growth in urban population has led economic progress and on the other hand it has proposed many challenges for the urban India. One of them is lack of infrastructure for fast growing population. As people are moving from rural areas to urban areas in search of betterquality of life one of the biggest issue they face is the access of proper sanitary facility. It is common to find people of weaker section defecating in open. In order to over this serious issue the Government of India has launched Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban with goals to achieve the objective of 100% Open Defecation Free position in all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the country by 2 October 2019. This study shows the Open Defecation Free certification of Indian Cities based on various indicators. Descriptive analysis and Composite index has been used to analyze the data.
