Abstract:

Energy needs of India are expected to rise twofold and electricity needs are expected to rise threefold by 2040. Non-conventional or renewable energy sources are set to become the most important sources of energy in the future as India looks forward to decreasing its dependence on fossil fuels as the sources of energy. India has made giant leaps in terms of policy and its implementation in promoting the generation and distribution of electricity and energy from renewable sources and such upward trajectory is needed to ensure that the country becomes self-sufficient and self-reliant in meeting its energy demands. Between meeting its international obligations of reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change, the Government of India needs to identify critical sectors that need help in undergoing the transformation to clean energy and promote policies that favour renewable sources of energy. As such the importance of public policy, and regulations is unparalleled as they are the key instruments for promoting the usage of renewable energy in the country.
