Year of completion: 2021

Abstract:

The efforts for cleaning river Ganga has been existing for over past three decades, however, with no fruitful results. Under these circumstances, it is pertinent to study the framework and core policy that has been guiding the previous efforts (Ganga Action Plans) and the present ‘Namami Gange’ programme. For the same, it would be pertinent to make a comparative study with a river which was comparable to Ganga in terms of pollution in the past, but was revived later with the help of change in institutional and regulatory framework. The entire dissertation is divided in 4 sections. The first part is the introduction, where the rivers are introduced. The second part deals with the literature review of the rivers and highlights the research gaps in the studies conducted till now. The third portion, is the detailed overview of the laws, policy relating to decentralization, privatization of U.K, Germany, France, Netherland and India. The fourth portion is a detailed discussion of what India can incorporate from these countries to improve the existing system in place. The aim of this study is to have a holistic view of how Ganga can be effectively cleaned.
