Abstract:

This study examines the significance, of the relation between the Built Environment in which one spends most of his time, i.e., House and the Mental Well-being of the Households, from the available literature including in the legal as well as health dimensions, and in combination with an empirical research conducted as a part of this same study in the district of Trivandrum, State of Kerala using variables both from the aspects of Housing and Human Behaviour for searching and identifying the need if any housing policy fostering mental wellbeing, and in the event of its relevance, for evolving a model housing policy for the nation that fosters mental well-being of the residents because mental well-being is a prerequisite for everybody’s normal growth and development of the intrinsic potentials to the possible fullest or optimal level. The results show a positive relation between the subjects’ psychological factors such as Self-esteem, Emotional Control, Satisfaction level in their day to day activities, and level of Health with the aspects of Housing such as the condition of the house, noise level, number of trees, and interaction with Environment, as impacts of Housing on mental well-being. The work containing ample insights from authentic literature from Law and Environmental Psychology has also analysed the existing Housing Policies, Treaties, Laws, Judicial Verdicts and Observations. However, it is observed that the existing housing policies do not consider the impact of Housing on Human Life, Behaviour and Mental Well-being, seriously other than a place for residence. In this lacuna, the present study highlights the need of an Environment-Friendly Housing Policy for Mental Well-being for every resident to facilitate the optimal level of development of potentials to be competent citizens in the international arena in the present age of increasing globalisation; it also presents a Model Housing Policy, and need and scope for further studies in the field of housing.
