Abstract:

Given the fragile socio-ecological status of J&K, this study evaluates the feasibility of utilising Social Innovation approach for sustainable Energy transition. Social Innovation approach shows promising results for multiple aspects of Sustainable Energy-Energy Security and provided satisfying results for multi-objective decision making problems generally associated with using Bioenergy resources.4A Energy security evaluation frameworks reveals that for J&K post Social Innovation roadmap Energy mix including local Bioenergy resources (in this case Pine needles) makes the Energy basket of 2.4% more available,6% more accessible, 12% more acceptable and 28% more affordable. Goal Programming Modellingmethod results show that pine needle based decentralized electricity generation would be more cost competitive and would generate an employement of 300000 persons for total generation potential in whole UT. 1800 MW of electricity can be produced after satisfying multiple objectives.Policy nudges would be needed along the energy supply chain as well as at the end use. Combining all the results showed that, overall, to rely completely on long gestational and politically unstable projects like Hydro for J&K can not provide sustainable road to Energy Transition and it can not reduce the ongoing burden on UT’s electricity board. Therefore, using Social Innovation approach which recommends the bricolaging and using local resources for generating electricity can caterto interests of diverse stakeholders.
