Abstract:

The transformation of the transport sector, which is one of the highest producers of greenhouse emission, has been one of the issues which is currently being addressed. Policymakers globally are encouraging the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for road transport and phase out conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) driven vehicles.

Conventional grids are transforming and adopting Smart Grid technologies. With high adoption rates of EVs strategies should be devised to restrict the rising peak of the load curves and reduce dependence on conventional coal-based power plants & charge the vehicle with green power which can be done by controlling the loads by using (vehicle to grid integration). VGI by utilizing Smart Charging methodologies will help cater the growing electric vehicle charging loads and manage it according to the requirements of the power grid.

Smart charging can offer system services such as demand response, voltage regulation, and other services to reduce/defer the necessary capacity augmentation. V2G can provide flexibility services to grids much more than any form of V1G. By implementing V2G strategies the EVs can be used as DERs (distributed energy resources).

Smart charging with pricing signals like Time of use Rates (ToU) , power export, frequency controls and other arbitrage opportunities arise with implementation of smart charging technologies which makes EVs a more viable option for consumers.
