Abstract:

MSME sector is one of the most energy intensive sectors, yet it is one of the sectors with the least amount of data available. Most of these industries are still running on technologies that have been replaced by much improved versions. This study mainly focuses on one such industry within the MSME sector which is Kraft paper industry. The study has been carried out in the Muzzafarnagar Paper cluster. Energy mapping has been done for a model 200 TPD Kraft Paper Plant and specific energy consumption has been calculated. Energy Audits were performed in various kraft paper mills and technologies have been identified on the implementation of which large amount of energy savings can be achieved. The energy savings have been calculated along with the monetary savings and reduction in CO2 emissions. It can be observed that more than 24 lakh units of electricity and 3155 MT of fuel can be saved annually. All of these plants are currently running on energy supply from the grid and various fuels, which ultimately lead to a lot of CO2 emission. The study also explores the possibility of using solar energy to replace some part of the grid consumption.
