Abstract:

Environment protection “has been one of the most pressing issues of the present century. Initially protection of environment was restricted to only the air, water and land. However with the coming advancement and technology in the field of medicine, great progress was made. This progress led to creation of a separate line of wastes called the “Bio-medical waste”. Medical field is a one which is necessary to maintain good health and wellbeing of the people and hence it has to keep on progressing and evolving. However this evolvement of the field brings with it the risk and hazard associated with the hospital waste. It is hazardous and toxic in nature and has to be dealt with utmost caution. It means proper segregation and root level and final disposal in the best interest of the human beings and also environment. As analyzed from the texts already available the main road-blockers in this quest are lack of infrastructure and funding, lack of awareness for proper handling, inadequacy of professionally trained staff, inadequate legal regime and enforcement, etc. In the above mentioned context, this dissertation aims to examine the nature of the bio-medical waste and its impact on human health and environment. It also focuses on analyzing the legal regime and recommend ways to improve” the current situation. It also analyzes the technologies and methods to properly dispose of the waste.
