Abstract:

Urbanisation and Industrialisation has resulted in a vast generation of waste in the country. As the population is increasing and shifting towards the urban cities, the management of burgeoning solid waste has become a critical issue especially in major cities. The goal of this study is to find out how much the Waste Management Rules, 2016 are effective in managing the waste in the country. It also looks at the role of the authority in the process. This database has been developed through literature review and survey. It focuses on the problem concerning the lack of capacity in the Waste to Energy plants and already overburdened landfill sites. Delhi being the nation capital faces the crisis all the more. My research finding indicate that the 2016 Rules are improved as comparative to the 2000 Rules, but there is a lack in implementation and without the contribution of waste generators it is a very tedious task. In a city like Delhi, where local by-laws are there and MCD is working on proper implementation, the city is still not capable enough to manage its own waste. It also answers the inefficiency of the system and how it can be improved.
