Present study is about the Garbage Free City (GFC) Star Rating Project and how it is useful as an efficient structure for management of the MSW in ULBs. As a part of Swachh Bharat Mission- Urban GFC aims to make every city garbage free in India. Being the second most populated developing country in world consumerism and more use of resources lead to increase in generation of waste. MoEF&CC monitors the management of Municipal solid waste and ground level implementation is executed by the ULBs as one of their key functions. With increasing waste generation the challenges of handling and treating waste will also rise. To minimize such problems MoHUA launched the GFC star rating project to make every city an ideal city in terms of sanitation and hygiene. To apply in GFC, ULBs get GFC protocol and a user manual; which includes all the required information and guidelines to ensure that cities can apply the given framework in an easier way. This study also talks about the performance of cities of Gujarat in the GFC star rating in past 3 years. The analyses of the affected underlying factors have been done and also identification of the beneficial and challenging indicators across the solid waste management spectrum is also done in case of Gujarat. The overall discussion includes the benefits, challenges and the recommendations to overcome such challenges in the process and implementation of GFC protocol in ULBs of India.
