Abstract:

Methane emission from landfills contribute as the third largest anthropogenic genesis in Greenhouse Gas having 28 times CO2 equivalent GWP. In this study through the IPCC default method, CH4 emission was 439.4, 1074.9, 1202 and 1282 Gg for the years 2000, 2010, 2014, 2019 respectively. There was a sharp correlation between the population growth and the methane emissions of R2 value 0.95 and 0.91. FOD method shows 397 Gg/yr and 700.9 Gg/yr in the years 2000 and 2019 respectively which are lower than that of the Default method estimations. Efficient ISWM methodology with proper stakeholder management is reviewed. Technology innovation, integration of informal sectors and stringent policy measures can help in the ISWM approach. Landfill gas recovery is a dire need in the current situation and proper biotic systems will speed up the process.
