Abstract:

With the expansion of megacities in India, there has been a rise in job opportunities thanks to these cities been the hub of business and commerce which has led to the cities expanding and developing the nearby areas. But due to the development, the expansion of cities has to be planned so that the immigration from different parts of the country can settle down, and yet the areas they live in are equipped with the amenities required to survive in a city. But in reality, this is not always possible which has led people to settle down in any space they find suitable, in areas of temporary settlements which have later become permanent, for low-income groups which have led to unplanned settlements scattered throughout the urban areas at places which had not been legally declared for residential purposes. Also, the available areas are so scarce that it has led to the formation of high-density clusters of households, commercial spaces, and industrial spaces. In most of the scenarios, the wastewater is not suitably managed and this has led to problems in sanitation and calls for better management. With suitable factors present or existent in urban areas proper maintenance of sanitation services and treatment of septage from these services should be practically a very efficient process but in the case of developing urban areas in highly populous regions, this isn’t the case. Therefore this thesis tries to understand what are the technologies present in the world which are widely acknowledged, understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the technologies and their implementation individually or in combination. This is based on the approach, parameters of installing the technology, and information on the area collected from pieces of literature about the urban areas or best-fit technology for these areas.
