Abstract:

With the rapid increase in urbanisation and average income, citizens seek better levels of comfort and ease of living. Availability of better quality of road infrastructure and increasing distances to the places have resulted into a higher ownership rate of vehicles in India. Increasing movement of vehicles on the road significantly increases the city pollution levels and imposes threat to public health. Electric Vehicles are widely promoted as a sustainable transportation mode as compared to conventional vehicles and are widely accepted by the world.

The government of India has launched an ambitious mission to achieve 30% share of electric vehicles by 2030. Many national and state level policies and campaigns are also launched in order to aware citizens about the benefits of electric vehicles and increase their purchase. But India is till in a very initial stage of this transition and better policy and environmental measures can be adopted to leverage faster and greener transition to electric vehicle.

This study tries to assess the successful initiatives taken by foreign countries to achieve higher share of electric vehicles in their countries. The major drivers of the change in selected countries are identified and are compared with the state level policies of India. To assess the sustainability of transition to electricity-based transportation mode, assessment of electricity generation scenario has been carried out.

At the end, policy recommendations are given to lead India to faster and sustainable adoption of electric vehicles.

Key Words: Electric Vehicle, EV Adoption in India, Indian EV Policies, Charging Infrastructure, Electricity Demand for EVs.
