Abstract:

As most of the India’s coal reserves are found in the eastern parts of the country, while its utilization is extended all across the nation, Indian Railways plays a very substantial role in the generation of electricity by transporting coal in bulk to the power sector as consumption in India is at a very higher side when it comes to the electricity generation by coal based thermal power plant. This study focuses upon mainly three components, the background/trend of power/electricity generation sector of the country, studying the coal freight trend of Indian railways over the period of years and very carefully looking at some TPPs’ in a study area (referred as cluster(s)) that are more than 10-15 years old and will perhaps go out of service upcoming years and analyze the amount of coal consumption that will go out after these TPPs’ will go out of service. Study has also observed some upcoming TPPs’ in that same study area and then analyzed the difference in the coal demand for those TPPs supplied by Indian railways and at the same time the impact of decreasing/increasing coal demand on Indian railways. To make this study more comprehensive and robust, a SWOT analysis is also done and some recommendations have been proposed.
