Abstract:

Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) as a pre-treatment waste management method provides a solution for reducing the waste burden to the landfill and/or incineration facilities. With the help of the MBT plants, biological stabilization of organic matter by anaerobic digestion or composting and mechanical separation of different type of waste are achieved. Moreover, methane emissions can be reduced significantly with the MBTs. Methane is one of the most significant drivers of climate change, which is the responsible for 40% of the global warming since the industrial evolution. Climate change benefits of the MBT facility of Burdur Province Integrated Solid Waste Landfill and Disposal Facility in Turkey in terms of biogas (methane) production is analyzed in this study. MBT and electricity generation plant have recently constructed to the Burdur Facility before landfill. Waste processing, MBT technology and biogas production are examined in the facility. Methane emissions are also compared with the other waste management methods like incineration and landfill. Even though the results showed that emissions from the incineration is very low compared to the landfill with MBT incineration, there are several environmental problems with the incineration plants. It is observed that MBT plants significantly reduces the waste load, reduces the emissions to the landfill / incineration and brings several environmental and economic advantages such as biogas, recycle waste and solid fermented product which can be used as a remedial in the soil.
