Abstract:

Indian government currently has to deal with few multi-dimensional problems including pollution, achieving GHG emission reductions to fulfil the targets of Paris Agreement Goal of India, achieving energy security by reducing dependency of the nation on imported fossil fuels and finally meeting the rising and changing demands of vehicles in India. To deal with these problems one of the approaches being taken by the government is the promotion of Electric Vehicles. Electric Vehicles have the scope of providing carbon mitigation benefits to the nation and reduce the GHG emissions by 30-35% by 2030. EV policy is thus working in this direction. It is important to study that how have EVs been approached on an international level and what is the contribution of India in the same. Thus, national level and state policies for EVs have been analysed through literature review and secondary data analysis. Next the research study aims to further analyse the carbon mitigation benefits from the EV policies in India and to identify the scope and challenges for the growth and adoption of EVs. Carbon mitigation benefits have been calculated using CDM methodologies while barriers for adoption and growth of EVs have also been analysed and identified using a community survey on Electric Vehicles in India.

Keywords: carbon mitigation benefits, EV policy, Electric vehicles, GHG Emission reductions, growth and adoption.
