Abstract:

In today’s world, plastic has become a very important and irreplaceable part of human life. It is widely used in toys, building materials, shopping bags etc. Generally plastic materials have the tendency of getting recycled but the maximum number of times a plastic can get recycled is 2-3 times because after that the quality of the plastic gets distorted because of application of thermal pressure after each recycle. There is no proper collection and segregation facility in place in the country (Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs Government of India, 2019).

Plastic can cause all kinds of pollution and lead to many health diseases. These when reach the oceans or other water bodies can be taken in by aquatic animals and can lead to threat of biodiversity. These aquatic animals are then often ingested by humans, therefore leading to health issues in the human population also. Only a small fraction of plastic is recycled and the remaining major portion ends up in landfills where after several years they might release toxic chemicals into the environment and lead to pollution.

Key words- Plastic waste, Plastic waste recycling, COVID-19, Plastic waste management and High Density Polyethylene.
