Abstract: The Indian Power Sector is undergoing a rapid growth phase with a vision to
provide reliable, cheap and quality power for all by 2012. The demand for power
is growing exponentially in accordance with the high level of developments on
both infrastructure and social fronts. In the infrastructure sector the focus is on
the progress in telecommunication, roads, airports and ports. On the social front
the aim of providing reliable power has emerged as the main reason for increased
focus on the power sector.
Renewable energy and energy efficiency has gained increased importance in
electricity sector planning and regulation since the last decade in India. India has
huge potential of renewable energy resources, and it has one of the largest
programs in the world for exploiting maximum renewable energy based products
and systems.
Indian government has given significant importance to renewable energy
development and has undertaken a wide range of policy initiatives to give
impetus to renewable energy and energy efficiency. An attempt is made through
this project to review the various policies and measures undertaken by Indian
government for promotion of renewable energy.
The aim of this project is also to review the current policy mechanisms,
especially investment-based or generation-based price-driven and capacitydriven
mechanisms, ranging from investment incentives for the development of
renewable energy projects, feed-in tariffs, production tax incentives, tradable
green certificates, and their effects upon the prospects of encouraging as well as
expanding the development of renewable energy in Indian restructured power
sector. This will make renewable more attractive in the Indian future electricity
market.
