Abstract:

It is widely recognized that the continuation of greenhouse gas emission can alter the climate parameters leading to the warming of atmosphere. This poses several challenges and risks to the global economy and will have serious impacts across many sectors. As a result, many companies measure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by their activities to assess and address the potential climate related risks and opportunities. In this study, corporate level greenhouse gas inventory for a manufacturing company is designed and prepared to calculate the total emissions for the period of 2018-2019. Through site assessment, different sources of emission including direct, energy indirect and indirect emission were determined within the operational scope of the company. The quantification methodology adopted was calculation based as per GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, i.e. activity data of GHG sources multiplied by GHG emission factor. The output emission figures calculated clearly showed the total emissions according to the scopes of emission. This information was set to understand the Science Based Targets which proposed the mitigation roadmap and recommended activities to align with the global emission reduction of 2 degree Celsius for the target year 2030. For the transition towards a low carbon pathway, various strategies was formulated to reduce the emissions by deploying various initiatives. The recommended strategies were installing rooftop solar panels, sourcing open access renewable energy, alternate technologies including electric furnace and waste heat recovery method, energy efficient practices in plant and ancillary operations. Also, plantation drives is also recommended to create carbon sink to sequester the carbon released due to the operations of the company. Thus, the overall study of inventory helps to propose pathways for decarbonization of an organization.
