Studies investigating the influence of air pollution on travel behavior is scarce, especially in the context of India. With Delhi’s rising population and deteriorating air quality, the aim of this paper is to design and evaluate a survey methodology that can capture this influence. A pilot survey was conducted by telephone on eighteen residents of Delhi. These residents were from expert backgrounds of air quality, transportation and health services. Through secondary research, a survey methodology was identified which incorporated stated and revealed preference survey and a trip dairy to capture the influence of air quality on travel behavior. Questions on awareness and perception of the air quality in Delhi were also included.
The overall survey questionnaire was found to be satisfactory. Expert feedbacks were collected and gaps were identified in the administered survey. Some of the important feedbacks included- reducing the length of survey, reframing certain questions and adding more questions to capture the perception of respondents on air pollution. Based on the gaps identified, recommendations have been made to improvise the survey format. The improvised survey methodology can be administered for the future on-ground survey.
