The pulp and paper industry are expected to escalate full-fledged in the coming years. However, the growth and sustainability of this industry is affected by stringent environmental issues and regulations. In the report the attempt has been made to critically review the impacts of different process involved in the PPIs on local resident and environment. In environmental context, pollutants (of air, chemical, water, solid waste) with their sources has been tabulated to review the respective environmental implications. Absorption of efficient, upgraded and green technologies in manufacturing and processing would increase the productivity and would escalate the social, economic and environmental development in pulp and paper industry.
This report has covered the aspects of Indian paper and pulp industry importance and limitations, the processes involved, environmental concerns related, malpractices. The report has also taken into account the physico-chemical properties of effluent discharge from the 4 mills of Muzaffarnagar district, out which 2 mills have pH, TDS, TSS, BOD, COD, colour within permissible limits. The samples were collected, analysed and compared with CPCB standard norms. Treatment technologies such as ETP, Chemical recovery have played a significant role to reduce the impact on the immediate environment of the PPIs.
The study is based primarily on analysis of the samples collected from mills and secondary sources. The major data has been taken from various reports of CPCB, CPPRI ranging from financial year 2000-2001 to 2016-17. The collected data has been analysed and presented in the form of tables, pie charts, graphs and standard norms.
Paper touches our lives daily in one moment or the other, SWOT analysis of Indian pulp and paper industry to capture the Strength, weakness, opportunity and threat has depicted the future growth and development of the industry.
