Abstract:

India ranks the 6th position amongst the top 10 nations in terms of sanitation coverage. Though over years after the introduction of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, the sanitation status of India has improved and the sanitation coverage has been increased but still the disparity lacks in the percentage use, maintenance and proper treatment of the human excreta.

The ‘ Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’ ( Clean India Mission) was launched to address the issues related to waste management, cleanliness and sanitation in a holistic manner across the length and breadth of the country. The study of Assessment of Sanitation Coverage across the Urban states of India has helped to demonstrate the feasibility and viability of the sanitation value chain. It has also highlighted the needs and demands of the growing population and the need to manage the both demand and supply chains simultaneously in a harmonious and sustainable manner.

Different states were studied to get a comparison of the sanitation status. Mixed results were obtained for the certifications. The role of toilets and treatment toilets plays a crucial role.

No 100% open defection goal can be achieved without the participation of the people because ultimately they are the one who will be gaining the advantages of better sanitation facilities and also they are the majorly responsible for maintaining the sanitation status. The study reveals there is less awareness and lack of coordination among the people, the ULB officials and each and every stakeholder involved in the sanitation value chain which leads to the existing disparity.
