Abstract:

This paper addresses the gendered disparity caused by socio-economic constraints in accessing education in Laxmi Nagar, New Delhi which is a nodal point of East Delhi. The paper addresses key factors that hinder girls attainment of education in urban areas who belong to lower income families of New Delhi and the quality of education they are availing. Through the paper we will also understand the mushrooming of low cost private schools, its increasing demand in the locality and high dependency on coaching institutes in the area due to the unsatisfactory quality of education in public and government schools. The paper lays out key emphasis on the Muslim community in the Laxmi Nagar area and understand what causes gender differences in educational inequalities for them .Educational inequality may also be due to a hidden opportunity cost of engaging girls in activities (e.g. providing childcare for younger siblings) that have economic value for the family, particularly for girls in rural areas and from the lowest income families and how different or similar that is in the urban areas in India. The paper uses Systematic Review of Literature, Focused Group Discussion and Direct Interview to have a deeper understanding of the study area. The results provide evidence to support these objectives and research questions.
